The region’s largest trade event for the project cargo & breakbulk industry

Clariant’s US Desiccant Site Turns 40

Moisture Protection Solutions Safeguard Cargo During Transportation and Storage

Clariant Cargo & Device Protection recently celebrated more than 40 years of desiccant manufacturing at its site in Belen in the southern U.S. state of New Mexico.

The business segment, part of Switzerland-based specialty chemicals maker Clariant, has been processing responsibly mined bentonite clay – a naturally occurring mineral that adsorbs moisture into its layered structure – into desiccant-based products at the facility since late-1983.

Those products include the Desi Pak range of bentonite clay desiccant bags and packets, which are deployed to protect breakbulk and other cargo from moisture damage when placed in a sealed package, container or enclosure, and the recently launched, sustainable Desi Pak Eco line featuring desiccant packets made from plastic-free, bio-based paper.

The Belen facility also offers the Container Dri II solution, providing customers container desiccants to protect goods from the effects of moisture during shipping and storage.

Clariant, whose products are commonly deployed in sectors such as intermodal transport, aerospace and defense, electronics and semiconductors, food and health and personal care, mines bentonite globally at over 40 sites, allowing regional production and distribution.

“As industries increasingly focus on sustainability, we’re proud to support these efforts with our Desi Pak natural bentonite clay desiccant bags and Desi Pak ECO packaged in plastic-free, bio-based packets,” Ryan Grauer, head of sales, marketing and technology, BD CDP Americas, BU Adsorbents Americas, told Breakbulk.

“We responsibly source and mine our bentonite clay. Our commitment to ecological sustainability is clear: Clariant will restore and recultivate all bentonite mining areas to an equal or better state than when our operations began. By helping to protect shipments from moisture damage – whether with our Desi Pak, Desi Pak ECO for sealed packages and equipment or our line of Container Dri II for cargo containers – our desiccants help safeguard valuable cargo and reduce waste, facilitating a more sustainable supply chain.”

Clariant Cargo & Device Protection will be exhibiting for the first time at Breakbulk Americas on 15-17 October at the George R. Brown Convention Center in Houston. Meet the team in the Main Hall, Stand R08.
