The intricacies of risk management for project cargo provides many opportunities for mistakes or inaccuracies, which can lead to significant financial loss.

Beyond their inherent value, the damage or loss of big project pieces can cost many times their replacement value in project delays and business interruption. Capacity needs of larger projects require more than one insurer to cover the project, resulting in complexities that can be extremely challenging to the project manager and others involved in the project.

This course will cover all of the major elements of risk management for the project team, including cargo owners/managers, freight forwarders, carriers and other transport companies. You will leave the workshop with a better understanding of the nature of risk management and how to apply the course principles to your role on the team.

Identifying Project Potential in LATAM Markets

Despite some less than positive indicators, project business is looking up in Latin America. The region’s diversity, resources and sheer size combine to create significant capital project market potential. These factors also make it difficult to identify where the next opportunity – or risk – might arise.

Our experienced panelists from a regional cross-section including Brazil, Chile, Colombia and Mexico will discuss:

  • What projects are in the pipeline for infrastructure and mining? What about oil & gas – anything new of note?
  • In the forecast for capital projects, where are the regions to watch? Who is leading the pack?
  • Venezuela: how (and when) can it rebuild from an oil & gas base?
  • How will planned changes in government involvement affect capital project development?
  • What role will the EXIM bank play in organizing new projects?

Fireside Chat: Incoterms Rules and the 2020 Revisions – A Discussion

Frank Reynolds, the US Council for International Business representative to the International Chamber of Commerce for the Incoterms 2020 revisions, provides a look at the establishment and use of Incoterms rules and the status of Incoterms 2020 revisions. Incoterms have long been the preeminent internationally accepted rules for establishing trade and delivery terms between sellers and buyers in sales contracts. This session will also explore the application of these rules in today’s global business environment and the ICC's intention for improving the use of Incoterms rules with the 2020 revisions.

Join Reynolds and Global Logistics Consultant Dennis Mottola for an in-depth discussion of Incoterms past and future, as they discuss:

  • What is the history of Incoterms rules, and what are the proper means for applying them in a sales contract? What were the primary objectives of the ICC drafting committee with the 2020 revisions?
  • How was input from US sellers and buyers and those in other countries considered by the ICC in the 2020 revisions?
  • How might the 2020 revisions benefit sellers and buyers vs the current rules?
  • Have there been any updates or changes to term definitions?

Today's Topics – Perspectives from Carriers and Partners

Though EPCs and project owners have attempted to stay cautiously optimistic throughout the recent industry downturn, it’s unclear if the cargo pipeline is strong enough to sustain ocean carriers through another year. There are encouraging signs, such as Anadarko’s recent FID in Mozambique, but will projects on the drawing boards and in the bidding stages be ready to move before more carriers leave the business?

Carriers are looking at other options to stay afloat, such as consolidation, retrenchment of service lanes and broadening the scope of their services. Meanwhile, everyone is keeping a weather eye on the global tariff situation and the imminent implementation of IMO2020 – hoping the threatening skies will clear. In this session, we’ll hear executive perspectives on these hot industry topics.

The Reality of Digital Disruption and Emerging Technologies in the Project Cargo Industry

The project cargo industry is traditionally slow to change and notoriously tight lipped when it comes to sharing data and information, but a new generation of start-ups and logistics executives coupled with rife digital disruption in other industries means the landscape may be changing. This discussion will focus on what’s working in the industry, current trends and how you can position your company to make the most from technology.

  • Where does innovation intersect with breakbulk and project cargo logistics? What gaps need to be filled?

  • What technology is already prevalent – what’s lacking?

  • How can you successfully challenge the status quo within a traditional company?

  • Evaluating how technology fundamentally changes business models and internal processes– how can you prepare for this?

Solutions to be highlighted will be: augmented reality, virtual reality, ship and cargo tracking & tracing, IOT and wearable devices.

Live Demo I: Digital Ecosystem for Door to Door Shipping of Oversize Cargoes

A look back at how the last 20+ years of technology innovations have revolutionized various industries around the globe. The oversized and project cargo industry is on the cusp of a transformation where the historical challenges that have seemingly held it back from similar transformation can be met today using solutions pioneered for other businesses. We will discuss some of the existing challenges shippers and logisticians face today and how technology is available today that can simplify and transform their business. We will also look at the future trends in technology and how they will effect the near future of the oversized industry.
We’ll look at the following problems:

  • - How to best procure and evaluate logistics services and how to discover new providers for those services.
  • - Where is my stuff? How to track and trace cargo that doesn’t fit in a container.
  • - How do I keep track of everything about my shipments (documents, images, files, videos)?
  • - How do I effectively communicate to everyone involved in a large move? From getting approvals to lining up hand-offs to instantly providing feedback

Back on Track: The Future of the EXIM Bank and its Role in Financing Global Capital Projects

In May 2019, after years of delay, the Export-Import (EXIM) Bank quorum was confirmed by the U.S. Senate. Our panelists will discuss the role of the EXIM bank in financing major capital projects. The speakers will also examine the resulting impacts on EPCs and other capital project developers. This is an essential session for anyone involved in building RFPs or looking ahead to projects moving into the pipeline.

Panelists will discuss:

  • What does the EXIM Bank reboot mean for shippers and projects in the future?
  • Is there a long-term strategy for the Bank?
  • What will the renewal at fiscal year-end bring?
  • Can smaller manufacturers in the capital project area benefit as well?
  • What are key terms and conditions of EXIM Bank financing?

Our People, Our Future – The Next Generation

The ability to recruit and retain strong, diversified talent in a world of constant industry shifts is a key concern worldwide. In the breakbulk and project cargo market, this struggle is even more pronounced. In the third installment of our talent and diversity series, we’ll compare the perspectives of newcomers and industry veterans to learn what each side is seeking, what initiatives and opportunities exist to bridge the skills gap, and what next steps can be taken to build the logistics workforce of the future.

Our panel will examine:

  • What opportunities are available for internships and management training? What programs have been successful?
  • What skills are today’s companies looking for? Do they dovetail with curricula?
  • Engagement and outreach: what’s working?
  • How can these methods be applied in your sector?

  • Can existing rail and road infrastructure support longer, larger and heavier components?
  • What changes need to be implemented?
  • What regulatory differences exist between countries such as Brazil or Argentina compared to the U.S.? How do these affect cargo transport?
